چکیده

To its advocates, posthuman enhancement represents the pinnacle of what contemporary humanist scientific and technological endeavour can achieve; to its detractors, it has come to represent the fullest realisation of human technological folly. But while it is perhaps unsurprising that such a contentious, emotive and seemingly bi-polar issue has resulted in a scramble to arms, what is a surprise is the frequency of secular humanists to advance arguments based on outmoded and contradictory thinking. To illustrate this point, I have outlined some essential elements of three contemporary counterarguments to posthuman enhancement, noting their obvious pitfalls. I conclude by suggesting that if those who advocate posthuman enhancement are to be engaged successfully then new perspectives and arguments are necessary.

The question of disability in the post-human debate. Critical remarks.

The issue of disability represents a test case for the sustainability, practical and theoretical, of transhumanist theories that lead to the advent of a posthuman era. In fact, dealing with mankind implies also the possibility that man has a disability. So, seeing whether, in the posthuman debate, persons with disability are respected, will show us if every man is respected. In this paper we st...

In defense of posthuman dignity.

Positions on the ethics of human enhancement technologies can be (crudely) characterized as ranging from transhumanism to bioconservatism. Toward a transhuman model of medieval disability

To elaborate an understanding of medieval humanity rooted in the body, we must consider a broad class of ‘bodies’ beyond the physical. Applying the methodologies of disability studies to textual corpora offers new ways to reflect on the boundaries of the human in medieval literature. The dits, generically mixed texts, may thus be read as a corpus generated from a posthuman blending of textual e...

Toward an Ethico-politics of the Posthuman: Foucault and Merleau-ponty

We live in an age where rapid developments in technologies and environmental catastrophes increasingly question the limits and meaning of the human and human “agency,” the inevitability of human “progress,” and the capacity of humanity to control its world. In response, there have emerged a number of different ontological ideas of the “posthuman.” These continue a critical history emerging from...

Why I Want to Be a Posthuman When I Grow up 1. Setting the Stage

Extreme human enhancement could result in “posthuman” modes of being. After offering some definitions and conceptual clarification, I argue for two theses. First, some posthuman modes of being would be very worthwhile. Second, it could be very good for human beings to become posthuman. 1. Setting the stage The term “posthuman” has been used in very different senses by different authors. I am sy...
